Phoenix is home to many city hikes—from simple to challenging. And this time of year (the best time of year) is when it’s best to get outside and enjoy as many as you can.

A view of Lookout Mountain in the distance from North Mountain National Trail.

Dave and I have stepped up our fitness regimen by hiking up North Mountain National Trail three times a week—in preparation for summer hikes in the Canadian Rockies. Short and steep, rocky yet also paved, and mercifully close to the house. From the top, we spotted Lookout Mountain, nestled behind a resort and golf course bearing the same name. That moment decided our next hike.

I was skeptical at first. It is so short (under a mile)—is it worth the effort? Short answer—yes, if you are looking for a quick, uncrowded challenge with incredible vistas from all directions.

Parking was plentiful, despite a small lot. Immediately, I could tell this was a hike frequented by those living nearby—those lucky dogs.

Going up.

The trail gets steep quickly—around 500 feet in .9 miles. Scrambling up some loose rock gets you to the summit, so wear some decent shoes.

Once you’re at the top, enjoy the view—it showcases the valley from a completely different perspective.

A view from the summit.

Plus, it’s quite the feat to bag a peak in under an hour.
