Eight days in—finally acclimated. This time around, our transition from desert to mountains was exhausting. The marathon drive, in combination with some unnecessary border paranoia, took its toll.

Initially, thin air and the daily climb of multiple flights of stairs left us a bit out of sorts. Regardless, our first hike lay in wait, with no time like the present to tackle it.

Prairie View, also known as Barrier Fire Lookout Trail, is located within the Barrier Dam Day Use area and features a breathtaking viewpoint looking south over Barrier Lake. Please note: As of June 1, 2021, you must purchase a day, multi-day or annual Kananaskis Conservation Pass for your vehicle before you visit Kananaskis Country and the Bow Valley.

After parking at the new and expanded Barrier Dam Day Use Lot, we made our way around the lake to Prairie View—an out and back connector trail comprised of a series of steep switchbacks that lead to the viewpoint.

The outlook was 6.6 km (4.2 miles) and 421 m (1,368 ft) in elevation, ONE WAY. We initially thought it was half that. That said—Dave and I had no regrets. It was quite the ascent along the old forest road leading to the lookout. We took our time—as if we had a choice (hahaha). Spoiler—the steepest section of the trail is towards the end, but the payoff is more than worth it.

At the top, I came across some signs of spring, nestled amongst the craggy rock. 

The downhill return was blessedly swift and efficient. Despite the chill of mid-May, the overall hike was an invigorating first hike. I think Dave and I are beginning to feel right at home.
