Sometimes you live in a place for the longest time and never really see it. You know, always looking down at your feet, focusing on the task at hand, whether it be walking the dogs or hiking to a favorite spot.  Until one day—you look up—and see the most extraordinary thing. A flash of green, wait, no, multiple flashes, and the chirping, loud and continuous. After 25 years you finally spot a Rosy-faced (peach-faced) Lovebird.

This is the DESERT—right? 

My friend Karen told me that the Rosy-faced lovebirds have been in the valley for over 20 years.  It seems, that back in 1987, a large flock was released intentionally in the Apache Junction area. They thrived, and migrated throughout Phoenix. Apparently, these birds, native to South Africa, love the dry heat of the desert and the exotic plants that grace the yards of many Phoenix homes. Living in the city protects them from most desert predators. 

Our much-belated discovery has added a little more adventure to the daily dog walks. Kinda sweet.
